Art Through Time: Contemporary Reflections

"Art Through Time: Contemporary Reflections," curated by Virginia Damtsa, is hosted at Alon Zakaim Fine Art from April 3 to May 31, 2024. This exhibition presents a unique dialogue between contemporary and modern artworks, reflecting on how current artists interpret and respond to the masters of the past.

The exhibition features a diverse array of artists, each bringing a contemporary lens to historical influences. It looks at the evolution of history through art and the evolution of art through time. Michael Craig-Martin's painting, a fusion of pop, conceptual and minimal art engages with the geometric forms of Alexander Calder, while Gavin Turk's still-life painting offers a modern take on Henri Hayden's early 20th-century cubist work. Keith Tyson's painting titled “Seductress” has been paired with Robert Matta’s surrealist art, and Tal R bridges high art with childlike exuberance and sophistication, echoing the motifs of Marc Chagall.

Richard Wathen's mythical and mysterious portrait is inspired by Paul Delvaux’s surrealist painting of Penelope and Wen Wu blends literature and Asian culture with Alexander Archipenko’s Cubist influences. Sam Shendi's playful sculptures respond to Henry Moore’s iconic forms of mother and child, and Von Wolfe’s traditional oil paintings that incorporate technology with classical mastery is in conversation with Henri Fantin-Latour.

Emma Bennett explores themes of time and memory with a nod to Salvador Dalí, while Zavier Ellis responds to Picasso’s Guernica. Gordon Cheung's multimedia works delve into identity, connecting with Tsuguharu Foujita, and Scott Eaton’s digital art draws inspiration from Jaume Plensa’s spiritual sculptures.

Curator Virginia Damtsa emphasizes the exhibition's aim to celebrate the relevance of contemporary art by showcasing how contemporary artists reinterpret traditional themes, bringing fresh perspectives and sensibilities to timeless subjects. The exhibition underscores the ongoing influence of past masters on present-day art and highlights the innovative approaches of contemporary artists.
